Daydream Workshop – Durham, North Carolina | The complete workshop by Modern Baby Photography

1daydream

I am passionate about what I do because I simply LOVE what I do. I am taking all my talents, technically, artistically, and business-wise and creating one amazing workshop that covers it all. I wanted to create a workshop that doesn’t just put the focus on one thing, but all the things that make my business what it is today. There is something special about each of my sessions and I can honestly say that I love going between maternity, newborn and baby sessions. All three sessions are so different from each other and I’m really excited to teach you about all three.

Expect to learn A TON! This will be an ALL-DAY comprehensive workshop that will teach you the in-depth principals of working with newborns, expecting moms and babies. We will cover using natural lighting, posing, soothing, transitioning, camera techniques, and so much more. I will also go over different natural lighting techniques; such as those very airy backlit images I love creating. You will be shooting through out the workshop and are welcome to use any of the images for your portfolio.

Newborn photography is an art and should be treated with respect, care, and safety. You will learn all the tools you will need to conduct a safe, beautiful, and artistic session. You will make mommies across the states thrilled! And, if that isn’t enough, I will also be going over post processing so you will know exactly how to achieve those creamy skin tones as well as creating clean, beautiful edits. I will go over how to hand edit but will also include all my newborn actions in a goodie bag for you to have.

1

There is something so beautiful about expecting mothers. I will be going over different poses as well as planning out and styling a maternity session. One of my favorite techniques with expecting mothers is to backlit the image to create a light and airy feel that puts the focus on the beautiful mother to be.

3

Baby sessions are probably one of my favorites. The trick is to connect to your little bitty client and get them comfortable. I’ll go over all the easy poses you can do at different baby stages and show you how to create beautiful portraits where the focus is on the baby that every parent loves.

2

There will be a focus on the business aspect, including a marketing portion and how to find your dream clients. Lets face it, running a business is not easy these days and it’s very important to be business savvy in todays world.

If this sounds like something you want to be apart of (I’m hoping it is!) book your spot online. Remember, they are limited spots available . It’s important for me to keep the workshop classes small and personal. I want to be able to give each of the attendees’ 1:1 attention.

TUITION

$1500 USD

RESERVE YOUR SPOT

$300 USD retainer to reserve your spot.

Final payment ($1200) due 30 days prior to workshop date. Retainer fee is NON-REFUNABLE.

Olivia Ragland - Your style inspires me, it’s so refreshing! A lot of photographers in my area, Knoxville, TN, have very similar styles(a little old-school). So as a new business it’s very intimidating to break out of the norm. I would love the chance to learn from you and hone my own style in the process. Thank you for this amazing opportunity! -Olivia RaglandReplyCancel

Amber Mabus - I’m a small time photographer at Fort Bragg. I really only do it in my spare time and I donate all my proceeds to church. I feel that part of my calling is to help women and families see themselves as beautiful and wonderful creations like God does. He has guided me and helped me make beautiful pictures even when I didn’t have fancy equipment or really have the expertise. I routinely photograph families and children and would like to learn about photographing babies, especially since I have a grandchild on the way in March! I shoot a D800 now and LOVE it :) Thanks for your time, hope to meet you and so wish I could afford the workshop right out!ReplyCancel

I am ready to move up to that next level and be more creative with my clients and especially lighting. This would be an amazing opportunity. After serving in the military for 20 years I am now finally fulfilling my passion of photography while loving being a mom of 4, so quite busy and I try to attend one workshop a year but this year starting in June my husband will be deploying with the military for a year so no workshops for me – this would be amazing:) xoxo thanks for the generous donation to one lucky individual !!ReplyCancel

Diana Yntema - My name is Diana Yntema (diana.rose@rocketmail.com), and I’m located in Holly Ridge, NC. I just started up my own photography business (Diana Rose Photography) a few months ago, after years of pressure- I mean encouragement from my friends and family ;) I held off for so long because I didn’t feel like I was ready, I wanted to start off on the right foot, and feel at least somewhat prepared in all aspects. I’ve been dying to attend some workshops to educate myself, and there is always *something* that seems to be in my way- right place, not enough funds. Enough funds, not in the area at the right time, etc. Your Daydream Workshop sounds so amazing, and isn’t very far from me, but I am just not financially prepared right now =/ Winning a seat would be like a dream come true, I have such a desire to learn and network with fellow photographers!!ReplyCancel

I’ve been a Newborn and Child Photographer for 4 years and have always longed to make my self and work better. I want to be able to get the same posing, lighting, and SOOC images out of every session. I want to take my photography to the next level but have had a hard time with getting funds together. Every time I get enough saved something seems to go wrong and those funds have to go back into the family. This has put me into a rut, and I want nothing more then to attend your workshop and finally get my self and business where it needs to be :) ReplyCancel

Laura Harfield - I am from Ottawa, Canada and I am saving up to attend a high-caliber newborn workshop like this one. What a dream! I am a total hands-on learner wanting to take my photography to the next level. I am passionate about photographing the belly to baby journey, and it would be simply amazing to attend! I will start stretching out my hand muscles just in case I win, so I’ll be ready to furiously take down all those notes. :) ReplyCancel

    kristen rosenbusch - Hello,
I currently live in WA but would be more than willing to fly out and attend the workshop…tons of airline miles to be used! I am a military wife who started photography as a business in November 2012 after trying to get another teaching job when we moved here from Japan. Photography has always been a passion of mine and I decided now was the time to pursue it. I started shooting out of our home and now have a small studio space in our little downtown. I take every opportunity to practice and know that I have so much more to learn.

Although we move again in another year, our military family is everywhere, and I don’t mind starting up again in Virginia since word of mouth was our main advertising. Many of our friends have friends where we are moving and would recommend us. I just try to do my best with what I am given and take the good with the bad for the lifestyle we have :)

I greatly admire your work and you were one of the first photographers I started following when I decided I wanted to focus on newborns. You have such a clean, organic style that is just gorgeous! I would love to learn more from you, and this workshop would be an awesome opportunity. My husband does not deploy again until next year so this is a perfect chance for me to travel while he is home with our three kids and focus on me for a moment…which doesn’t happen often :)

    Thank you or considering me!

Lindsey Millard - I’m in Greenville, SC and I would love the opportunity to learn more about maternity, newborn, and baby photography! Right now I only shoot high school seniors, but I’m expanding into a studio space and I would LOVE to be able to offer newborn photography especially!! I’ve shot a couple newborns for friends, and I’m definitely missing something. I don’t have kids of my own yet, so I’d love to watch somebody experienced handle the baby in a safe manner and teach me basic posing. I would LOVE to come to the Raleigh area for a workshop!! The last time I did something awesome and out of my comfort zone photography-wise was in Winston-Salem second shooting a wedding for Alex Michele Photography! I feel like North Carolina is a learning place for me!!ReplyCancel

Rachel Burns - Hershey,PA- I would LOVE to attend one of your workshops but as a stay at home Mom to a 13 month ol beautiful baby girl and wife to a USAF husband every spare cent we have goes to covering bills, groceries etc- but I fully understand you can’t advance your business unless you invest in workshops such as the ones you teach- and here I stay stuck :-) I am a very quick learner and given the proper guidance I know I can run a very successful business and make my family proud, as well as give the gift of beautiful images to my clients. I hope you will take my submission into consideration I would be thrilled at the opportunity!

    Whitney Olson - Hello,

I am a self taught newborn photographer originally from Durham but I currently live in Sun Prairie Wisconsin with my husband and 4 year old little boy.

Winning a workshop seat is really the only way I will be able to attend a workshop. I am currently trying to pay off debt and save for a pro camera so saving for a workshop is 3rd on my list and years away.

If I won this workshop not only would I finally get the education I need to take my business to the next level and really make some real money but it would allow me to go home and see my family.

I admire your work an would love the opportunity to learn from you!

    Thanks!

tabitha morales - Hi. My name is Tabitha Morales. I have been interested in photography since junior high but as a low income teen I did not have the resources to get started besides my little kodak disposable. In high school I learned how to shoot a 35 mm in photography class, but again no resources to get my own. I lost interest out of highschool until I had my first Child and it all began again. Starting with just my child with a point and shoot and slowly advancing to an dslr and taking on clients. I feel like I am a good photographer but i would love to be a great photographer. I am not 100% sure of myself most times but with following Elena and learning what i can fom her blog and tutorials i am getting there. This would mean the world to me to be at the workshop. Being a mother of three i dont like to spend much money on myself or my dreams and this would open up a whole new world for me!ReplyCancel

Jamie Trost - Hi! My name is Jamie. I am a 30 year old, 2nd grade teacher, single parent, and photographer. My passion for photography started when I offered to take the pictures of the family at Christmas (everyone getting on Santa’s lap and opening gifts) for my Grandma so she could relax, something I did every year for her afterward. That was 19 years ago and after her death from battling cancer, I found myself playing with my parents Olympus E-500 more often. Looking at the pictures I was getting of my son, I felt in my heart a spark of passion and peace. That was the beginning of Digital StoryBook Photography.

My grandma and I always had a very special connection. I spent a lot of my time with her and always took time to write or call her. She always worried about me especially after my life “looked” like it was falling apart. I was a recent college graduate who was head over heals in love with my college sweetheart and our baby boy. He decided he didn’t feel that same way and left us when our son was 3 months old. We tried counseling but he ended up marrying her instead. The plan for my whole life was destroyed and I was devastated, but I am a smarter, better, stronger, harder working person because of it.

It is my passion for being successful, my instinct for caring for my almost 6 year old son, and my endless love for my best friend (Grandma) that I write to you today asking for a spot in your workshop. Newborns are a passion of mine. They are a blessing to the world. Capturing the first moments of their life are so powerful because they are moments that no mother or father can get back. I know this because I do not have these moments captured of my own son. Maybe my passion comes because I live vicariously through the parents who bring their babies into my studio?

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please view the video of my Grandma below. The very last picture in the slideshow was taken by me of her at her last Christmas (if I only knew it was the beginning of everything! :) ).

Shelby Schmidt - Hi Elena, my name is Shelby Schmidt and I’m from Olympia, WA. This May will mark my first year as a photography business owner, how amazing would it be to celebrate this landmark by bettering my maternity and baby photography skills! I’ve always considered myself a right brain thinker, I LOVE getting creative with using light and image composition, but I am struggling to self-teach the business side of it all! I am excited and proud about my craft but am looking for help in marketing strategies to become recognized for the brand and experience I create for my clients! Your workshop sounds like an incredible opportunity to gain the confidence and skills I am trying to achieve :) I’ve only traveled to the East Coast once in my life, and would absolutely love for the opportunity to grow with others through this workshop! I plan to specialize in Maternity and Newborn photography. I worked a year in Hawaii before my husband retired military and we moved to San Antonio. We are actually getting ready to make our final move to Kansas City so I am not working at this time. I decided to spend all of my down time learning and perfecting the arts. Your workshop would be a useful experience. I admire your style. I love the clean and natural looks. Crossing my fingers to win this chance!! Thank youReplyCancel

Lauren Eckard - Hi, I live in the Raleigh/Durham area and was thrilled when I saw the workshop was coming to Durham. I was an art major in college and focused on printmaking and photography (except it was all film then, hehe).I also have a teaching certificate and taught for several years before staying at home with my kiddos. About 2 years ago I started really learning my dslr in manual and taught myself based on what I knew from film and you tube videos. It has been a process but I have loved every minute of it! For me photography always holds something new and I always get one shot that makes me come back to take more. I would love for this to be a business for me and already started taking steps to work towards that. This workshop would be a perfect opportunity for me to learn first hand how the business works! I am a huge fan of your work and the airy and angelic feeling you get when looking at your photographs. I have 3 girls that I practice on all the time :) I also know a lot of babies, toddlers, pregnant mommas and kiddos if you need any models for the workshop :) Would love to be considered for the spot in the workshop.ReplyCancel

Christina Skinner - Hi! Thanks so much for an amazing giveaway!

I’m Christina and I live in Anaheim, CA. I have some experience with newborns but I’d love to improve my skills and confidence. I most shoot children on location but I’d love to have a small studio one day to do newborns. I’ve never attended a workshop because my business is very part time and my husband doesn’t see the need for me to invest in one. I’d love to learn from a pro though and ask tons of questions. I’m expecting my third baby in July so the timing would be perfect for more than one reason. :) We aren’t planning to stay in CA long term so I’m trying to plan ahead. Living here I can take advantage of our year round nice weather to shoot outdoors but when we move I know I’ll have weather to contend with so I’d like to focus more on newborns because I can do that in a controlled setting. And they are so cute and squishy so it’s not a bad gig. :)

    Thank you for the opportunity.

Amanda Grace - I have just started my photography business in the last year, and I enjoy that I am constantly learning.
Maternity is one of my favorite session…making a mama, that feels out of her element, look and feel beautiful. A workshop that cover this will only make what I love even more fun!
One of my weaker areas is newborn. I would love to have a newborn with instruction to inspire and direct how to get those beautiful images that every mamma wants and deserves.
    Thank you for the consideration.ReplyCancel

When I started my photography jounery my son was 2, 4 years later, my business is finally starting to grow, but I know that there is something missing. I feel like if I attended a workshop from one of my favorite photographers that I can have a foot in a whole new door. My daughter was born 2 years ago and I quit my job to stay home with my kids and that is when I started to see more increase in my photography. They inspire me everyday to be better than I was yesterday.

I have been admiring your work for a little over a year now and am still in awe struck at the images you produce.

Julie Collins - I follow your inspiring work and I look like a zombie unable to take my eyes off the computer whenever you post something new! I live in a suburb of Milwaukee, WI. I would love the opportunity to fill your giveaway spot because:

    1) I am the mother to four little (adorable but rambunctious) boys who drain me so much that I could really use a break!

    2) I know that my portfolio would be amazing after leaving.

    3) I’ve never been to North Carolina but my parents used to live there before I was born and they always say that it was their favorite place to live. I’d like to see why.

    4) I’m a fairly new professional photographer (started my official business in Fall of 2012) and I have a lot to learn about photographing newborns, babies and expectant mothers. I am self-taught and would love a successful professional such as yourself to show me how it’s done.

    5) The income I bring in along with my husband’s would not allow for me to come otherwise.

    6) Last but not least that studio makes me want to do cartwheels right down the middle. SO AWESOME!

So, pick me! Pick me! I know you want to see those cartwheels.
Thanks and have an awesome day!

Selena - Clearly I was so excited I missed the part about how we started. I started my business when my oldest was a baby. I had a photographer lined up to do her newborn photos and I could never get in touch with her. I never did get them done and have regretted it to this day. So I decided to learn how to take better photos of her myself. Then from there I realized that newborn photography was where my heart was so I decided to specialize in it about 6 months ago. I love every moment of it and I made sure to get those precious newborn photos of my 2nd child!ReplyCancel

When my 1st Daughter Ava was born, I became obsessed with the art of Photography (even though I knew absolutely NOTHING about a camera nor Photoshop). Yes I know, so cliche ????. I’ve read books upon books, stalked photography forums, YouTube videos etc and feel I’ve come a long way since starting my buiz, Lulu & Blush. However I have yet to attend any workshops and would be super grateful for the chance of getting some help & guidance with posing and studio light, as I’ve JUST purchased lighting equipment, YAY!! So excited. Hope its me that wins ????, and to make my way to be on the “other side” in the future.

Nikki Sabato - My name is Nikki and I am a photographer in central Ohio. It still feels surreal calling myself a photographer. I am always the one who would go out of my way to not make eye contact with anyone who even looked like they might ask me to take their picture. I was known for taking blurry, not centered, heads cut off photos. I never took photography classes in high school because I couldn’t stand the smell of the dark room. (Yes, I am that old.) LOL
I have 4 children, 2 toddlers and 2 in high school. With my point and shoot camera (and my terrible photography skills) I could never catch the action for my kids sports. 2 years ago I told my husband I wanted a nice camera for Christmas. He bought me a wonderful and likely expensive point and shoot camera. He was so proud of the gift, I didn’t have the heart to tell him that wasn’t what I meant by “nice camera”.
I continued to admire the “nice cameras” on-line. For my birthday, 4 months later, he got me the Rebel t3i. I am still hoping I didn’t somehow hurt his feelings, but this camera was the best point and shoot camera ever! I was the queen of auto-mode and loving it!
Little did I know after being an accountant for 17 years, (yes, again, I am that old) I got notice of my first ever lay-off. I started to apply for other positions within the company, when I had a thought (those don’t happen often at my age)… Why am I appling for more of the same stuff when I am not truly happy? I began to think about what makes me happy… children and my camera.
I got a part-time job at my kids’ daycare, and I studied photography like a sponge. I learned how to turn the dial of my camera off auto mode. I learned how to use Photoshop. I really did think you just had to hit play and the action automatically made the teeth whiter. It was new-age technology….WRONG!
I had my first photo shoot in May 2013. My focus is newborn, family and seniors. I love my new career! I get giddy when I see my photos printed. I love the clients, vendors and my favorite (secret) role-models… and yes, you are one of them, that is how I saw the post. I love your father’s philosophy ‘Professionals do not fear ametures’ and that you are willing to share your knowledge with us. The more photos I take, the more I realize there is so much more to learn. I crave that knowledge. And that is why I would like to attend your workshop. The 4 kids and little income is why I need it to be free. LOLReplyCancel

    Jodi Thompson-Koenig - Hello,
I am a 43 year old mother of three(16,12,6). I live in Indianapolis. I have been a nurse for over 20 years. I have always enjoyed photography. When my kids were younger, I returned to school for my BSN. While in school, I took some photography classes and developed a passion that has stuck with me over the years. Three years ago, I started a photography business with a friend of mine. I continued to take classes and develop a small business. I continue to work my full time job, but it is my dream to do photography full time. I know that I have come into this later in life, but I continually wonder what it would have been like if I pursued this dream 20 years ago. So, here I am working toward this goal. I have been working to add to my equipment. I want to expand my knowledge regarding newborn and maternity photography. I love your work! I enjoy seeing your before and after edits. You have a unique style, and your editing technique is amazing. I want to absorb all the knowledge I can regarding photography. Your workshop would offer me the opportunity to grow as a photographer. I work very hard. When I am taking pictures, I think about nothing else but what I am doing at that moment! I love that feeling! The stress of life melts away. Attending your workshop would be a stepping stone for me. I hope you will consider me for this opportunity. Thank you!

Felicia Sinclair - Hi! I’m Felicia Sinclair, owner of the new Felicia Sinclair Photography in Mukilteo, WA. I’ve been passionate about photography for the past 8 years, and it’s slowly morphed it’s way from a hobby to a business. I started out doing my friend’s Senior Portraits, and Family session for my teachers, but recently fell in love with mama’s and babies (possibly because I have baby fever…just saying it COULD be a factor…). I’ve known for a long time that I wanted to be a mom first and foremost- having my own children has always been important to me (yet I want to wait for the time to be right). I would love to win a seat to your workshop not only because I want to learn from you because of your crazy talent, but so I can better know to flatter expecting moms, and to SAFELY get all those cute newborn poses. The first year of a child’s life is, I think, one of the most important to capture because they grow so fast. I see myself going into Maternity & Baby photography as a specialty, and getting away from everything else. (I would also love to come to THIS workshop because I LOVE it in NC- I used to visit my family there every summer, and those trips are sorely missed, as is the sunshine.) This would be a huge blessing as someone just starting out, and I appreciate the opportunity you are providing one lucky duck with. Thanks a million, and continue inspiring me! <3ReplyCancel

Jodie Johnson - Hello! My name is Jodie Johnson and I am a photographer (Passin Time Photogrpahy) from Latrobe, PA which is east of Pittsburgh. I have had my own business for the last 4 years but have been blessed with a wonderful opportunity to merge with 2 other amazing local photographers to create a new studio, Photostream Studios. We have all decided to focus on one area as a speciality, and mine is newborn , maternity, children and family. But I absolutely LOVE my newborns! As a mom of 4 boys (19,13,11 and 3) life is always crazy in our household. When I get to escape to the studio to photograph a new bundle of joy my heart just signs! I love my boys, but the blessing of a new little one just speaks to me! Anyway, I have been looking for a workshop for about 6 months, but with the cost of opening the new studio and starting the merged business I am unable to afford to attend any workshops. I have learned everything on my own about newborns, maternity and newborn family photography. I so dream of working with someone like you who knows so much more then me! I want to make sure I am doing things right, for many reasons. To make sure safety is correct, that I am giving my clients the best images and posing and that I am marketing in the right areas. Please feel free to ask me any questions about my experience or my business! I hope I am able to meet you in a couple of weeks! I so would love to opportunity to learn and grow! Take Care, JodieReplyCancel
